PR Log - May 02, 2012 - Vastra, a Washington DC based Wellness Clothing company, announced today that it has launched a campaign on Kickstarter  for the most earth-friendly Yoga mat based on its concept from Ayurveda , the 5000 year-old Indian system for health and wellness.

Vastra is an ancient word from Sanskrit that translates to 'clothing' or fabric'.  The company's mission is to transform how people perceive clothing through the use of clothing and clothing-based products that not just for style, comfort, and protection but also for wellness.

Vastra's dyeing team in Kerala, India revived and refined this ancient technique of dyeing clothing to deliver the benefits of medicinal herbs through the skin , according to tradition. News organizations, including Time magazine and the BBC have covered the revival of this age-old/traditional concept and the growing interest in exploring its benefits.

"The skin being the largest organ in the body absorbs anything and everything that it comes into contact with ,and our products are based on this concept," said Sri Narayan, the Washington, D.C. based founder of Vastra. "By using clothing that is dyed with medicinal plants and herbs, as opposed to the toxic, synthetic and chemically-dyed alternatives, we are consciously choosing health not only for ourselves but also for our planet. "

Vastra's Yoga mat is fully handmade out of 100% organic cotton yarn that is dyed with plants and herbs like Turmeric and Tulsi(Holy Basil) along with many others. "We went back and forth many times on the design of the mat , based on feedback from active Yoga practitioners, to come up with a design that provides grip on surface as well as on the floor to keep the mat from sliding" , said Sri Narayan. The company's larger intention is to bring Ayurveda into the modern Yoga practice and sees its Yoga mat as a solid step in this direction.
